WORKSHOPS

Herman prefers to focus on his passion for creating unique, award-winning artworks in oil, watercolor, and gouache while painting en plein air.  Although he conducts a few workshops, these experiences allow him to travel to new locations sparking inspiration for his next masterpieces.  Each workshop is a chance for him to share his love for art and connect with fellow artists.

WHAT TO EXPECT 

“Let’s try a loose approach to help master Watercolour” Painting techniques and a philosophy of design will encourage bold, loose paintings.  Painting loose can appear effortless, but it requires a shift not only in process but also in thinking.  However, once you learn to literally “let loose,” relax and embrace the process, the results are powerful, freeing and have an almost effortless quality.  Herman will share his techniques and approach applied to several paintings within a landscape, streetscape theme displaying a more relaxed painting style. He will not only tell you how, but also show you!  Areas of demonstrations, and techniques:  design, drawing, colour, value, washes, glazing, wet in wet, masking, dry brush, lifting out and more.  This work shop will emphasize the colour palette from pure hues to neutrals.  We’ll explore colour choices in terms of their hue, value, intensity and contrast.  Focusing on colour theory, colour relationships and combinations, we’ll use pure hues in combinations to create beautiful warm and cool neutrals.  We’ll explore colour combinations, primary, secondary and intermediate colours including monochromatic and analogous colour schemes.  Discover how creating colour harmony will guarantee delightful colour and neutrals that make any subject matter sing. Focus on lighting your subject for maximum visual effect.  Each day will include demonstrations and individual work with Herman.  Expect to be challenged, to be brave, and to have fun!  Students are encouraged to bring their previous work for Herman’s appraisal.
